Sports betting dominates French operator, player disputes

France’s gambling regulator has revealed 2023 statistics on disputes between players and operators.

L’Autorité Nationale des Jeux said the games mediator, led by honorary magistrate Denys Millet, reported 1,523 requests received in 2023, an increase of 11 per cent year-on-year.

Sports betting accounted for 91 per cent of the requests, 752 of which were deemed inadmissible. The absence of a prior written complaint to the operator was the main reason for the mediator not following up these cases.

About a third of requests received “partial or total satisfaction,” the regulator, ANJ, said.

The average processing time of 31 days was below the maximum of 90 days set by the Consumer Code.

After reflecting on the mediation activity in 2023, the mediator has offered four recommendations to try to improve the information given to players and their protection.

These included taking steps to prevent excessive gambling.
